Addressing Racial Inequities Exposed
by the COVID-19 Pandemic by Dr. Jennifer Ho
We are seeing both the best and the worst of humanity in the midst of the global pandemic, and among the worst responses is the rise of anti-Asian harassment and racism that has emerged both nationally and globally. Join Dr. Jennifer Ho, Professor of Ethnic Studies at CU Boulder and Director of the Center for Humanities and the Arts as she shares her expertise as a scholar of race and racism in light of the issues emerging out of the COVID-19 outbreak. She will talk about the racial inequities that the coronavirus is exposing--- why Latin, Indigenous and Black Americans are showing greater numbers of fatalities relative to their population, and why anti-Asian racism in the US is part of a much longer history of bigotry and discrimination that Asians in America have faced from the 19th century to the present.
The daughter of a refugee father from China and an immigrant mother from Jamaica, Jennifer Ho is the director of the Center for Humanities & the Arts at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she also holds an appointment as Professor of Ethnic Studies. She is the president of the Association for Asian American Studies and the author of three scholarly monographs, including Racial Ambiguity in Asian American Culture. In addition to her academic work, Ho is active in community engagement around issues of race and intersctionality, leading workshops on anti-racism and how to talk about race in our current political climate.
