Race Across America and
Other Ultracycling Craziness

The Race Across America (RAAM) has been called “the most brutal organized sporting event you’ve never heard of.” Cyclists pedal from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, transit 12 states, climb more than 170,000 vertical feet, cross two deserts, go over three mountain ranges, and must travel through Kansas. Temperatures range from under 30 deg F to over 125 deg F. Once the clock starts, it does not stop until the finish line. There are no rest days. From the comfort of your Zoomspace, join Ellen Kirk as she shares what it takes to cross the RAAM finish line, as well as what it takes to get someone else across that line. Ellen will describe the physical and logistical challenges that must be overcome simply to get to the start, much less across to the finish, nearly 3,100 miles later.
Ellen Kirk is an endurance cyclist in her own right, having completed numerous double centuries (200 miles in a day), a triple century, a 24-hour race, and the Hoodoo 300, for which she holds the women’s course record in her age group. She is also an accomplished crew chief, a position that requires extraordinary organizational skills, a willingness to follow a rider averaging 10-15 mph for days, and the ability to keep multiple plates spinning while simultaneously changing plans, direction, and clothing. She has been Crew Chief for successful attempts at the 24-hour World Time Trial Championships, the Natchez 444, the Hoodoo 500, the Silver State 508, Race Across the West (RAW), and RAAM. Ellen has never attempted, nor will ever attempt, to ride RAAM.
