Trekking in Peru's Huayhuash Cordillera
presented by Merrill Anderson

In Summer 2013, Merrill Anderson joined his brother and two of his brother’s ex-Peace Corps buddies for a 11 day trek around Peru’s Cordillera Huayhuash.  This is considered one of the top rated alpine treks in the world, although much more remote and less crowded than popular routes in Nepal, Europe, South America, and New Zealand.  After the Cordillera Blanca, some miles to the north, the Huayhuash is the world’s highest tropical mountain range.  This remote and pristine range includes Yerupaja at 21,725 feet, the 2nd highest mountain in Peru, and Siula Grande (20,853 ft) of fame in Joe Simpson’s book Touching the Void.  There are seven other peaks in the Huayhuash range over 18,000 feet.  The 11 day route is about 80 miles and includes 7 passes over 15,000 feet (the highest at 16,600 feet).  A local guide service (Peruvian Mountains) made all arrangements from arrival and lodging in Lima, bus transport to and from Huaraz, lodging in Huaraz, and all trekking services (support crew, food, tents, donkeys and 2 emergency horses).  With a lifelong interest in hiking in the mountains, this up close and personal visit to really high mountains qualified as a "bucket list" experience for Merrill.

Merrill was born in Chicago and moved to Texas at an early age. He was raised in Lubbock, TX.  He spent 10 years in Austin, earning his BA and PhD (Counseling Psychology) at the University of Texas. His career as a psychologist included a few years in academia (Boston, Penn State, Minnesota), followed by 37 years in Houston, initially at a cardiac rehab clinic, followed by 30 years in private practice. He and his wife, Kathy (also a psychologist) retired to Longmont in 2017.  Merrill enjoys hiking, cycling, photography and meeting new friends through BNC.
